Behind the Smoke: Photographing Dr. BBQ for Food Network’s BBQ Brawl in St. Petersburg, Florida

I had the absolute pleasure of spending a day in St. Petersburg, Florida with none other than the legendary Ray Lampe—better known in the barbecue world as Dr. BBQ—for a laid-back portrait and lifestyle photoshoot. Ray’s career is nothing short of iconic: a BBQ Hall of Fame inductee, author, restaurateur, and television personality whose influence stretches from competitive cook-offs to acclaimed restaurant kitchens and TV screens. A longtime fixture at Southern Hospitality in Tampa and now at his own Dr. BBQ restaurant in St. Petersburg, Ray brought that same seasoned confidence to Season 5 of BBQ Brawl with Bobby Flay on the Food Network, where he competed alongside the country’s top pitmasters. His journey on the show was a testament to his expertise and showmanship, even as another talented chef ultimately claimed the title of “Master of ’Cue.”

Despite the high-stakes competition and TV cameras, the vibe on set during our shoot couldn’t have been more chill—warm Florida sun, wisps of smoke in the air, and that irresistible aroma of wood-fired barbecue drifting through every frame. Between shots Ray shared stories of slow-smoked brisket tests and behind-the-scenes laughs with Bobby Flay and the rest of the crew, making it clear why he’s not just respected but beloved in the BBQ community. The result was a day that smelled like mesquite and memories—equal parts artistry, authenticity, and downright delicious smoke—perfectly capturing the spirit of a man who lives and breathes world-class barbecue.
